Have you ever experienced sudden pains due to inflammation on your knees, hands or elbows after a day's work? That may be a normal sign of fatigue... Or that may be rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune ailment that makes the joints inflamed. By the way, a joint is where two bones meet so that body parts can move as they should and an autoimmune ailment is a disease which happens when the body's own tissues are mistakenly attacked by the body's own immune system, some kind of mistaken identity we could say. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause the inflammation of tissues around the joints and other organs. Due to a wide scope of the body which this illness can affect, rheumatoid arthritis is also called a systemic illness.

Rheumatoid arthritis causes discomfort to those who are experiencing it. An inflamed joint can cause swelling, pain, stiffness, and redness in the joints. This inflammation can also occur in the tendons, ligaments and muscles of the body. Prolonged inflammation may eventually lead to the obliteration of the cartilage, bones or ligaments and may also lead to the deformity of the inflicted area.

The signs and symptoms of this illness are not constantly there, they come and go depending on how inflamed the tissue or joint is. If the tissue is inflamed, rheumatoid arthritis is active, if it subsides then the disease is in remission. During the active stage of the disease, patients may experience fatigue, loss of energy, lack of appetite, low-grade fever, muscle and joint aches, and stiffness. Also during the return of the illness, joints frequently become red, swollen, painful, and tender. This occurs because the lining tissue of the joint experiences inflammation, thus resulting in the production of excessive joint fluid. However, during remissions, the symptoms seem to disappear and patients should feel better.

The gum resin extract of Boswellin taken from the stem bark of the Boswellia serrata tree contains Acetyl-11-Keto-β-Boswellic Acid (AKBA) which has been studied to have anti-inflammatory properties. This is due to its mechanism of inhibiting the activities of leukotrines which are fatty molecules of the immune system that contribute to inflammation. AKBA has been used even during the ancient times in India to treat illnesses that involve inflammation and today, this still holds true. AKBA supplements are still being used to treat dysentery, liver diseases, obesity, neurological disorders, ringworm, boils, and other afflictions including rheumatoid arthritis.
