Acetylcholine Exposed

Acetylcholine Exposed

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Acetylcholine belongs to the body’s biochemical group as one of the neurotransmitters. It functions specifically to carry nerve impulses throughout the body by delivering the signals from one neuron to the other. It also serves as chemical compound in charge for proper muscle and nervous system functioning.

Acetylcholine is also used as a component of certain drugs used to treat symptoms of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

In addition, ach also functions as the body’s “chemical messenger” in the form of a receptor. Acetylcholine as a receptor is located in different parts of the body especially in muscle tissues and neurons. These receptors have the ability to respond instantly once the body requires the release of acetylcholine. There are basically two types of these receptors, namely muscarinic and nicotinic.

In order for the body to produce acetylcholine a lot of complex chemical processes must be done first. The acetyltransferase is the main enzyme that starts the process of acetylcholine production by doing synthesizing process in the compounds acetyl-CoA and choline. This process done by the body determines whether the formation of ach is efficient or lacking. Deficiency in ach sometimes leads to memory disorders.

Acetylcholine is also an important component in the field of pharmacology. There are many drugs especially made to alter and control the functions of ach in the body, which involves blocking, mimicking, or hindering its functions. Cholinesterase is an example of enzyme inhibitors which functions to boost the effect of acetylcholine by prolonging its presence. As a medicine they are used to counteract the effects of muscle relaxant which is effective in treating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and myasthenia gravis.

First discovered as a simple chemical compound which later on found out as an important neurotransmitter, the importance of acetylcholine to living organisms especially to humans is growing more and more as our modern technology advances.
