Bromelain and Probiotics

Strangely enough one of the first things presented to Christopher Columbus when he came ashore in Central America in 1493 was a pineapple. Too bad Chris didn't know about it's medicinal values rather than something tasty to eat. If you're over the age of 30 you've heard this tale: "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." How about a pineapple a day? Well, maybe not. But a dose of bromelain can't hurt. In case you missed the boat on probiotics and enzymes, bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme found in the pineapple plant and back in the days before Columbus, flesh from the stem of the pineapple plant was applied to cuts and other skin injuries to aid in the reduction of inflamation. Pineapples are loaded with bromelain and in case Chris and his merry band of thieves didn't know, just drinking pineapple juice might have been helpful in easing their stomachaches and indigestion. However, most of the real good bromelain enzyme levels are found in the juice of the pineapple stem, but the taste of that stem is kind of yucky. Today bromelain can work wonders on arthritis pain and swelling but research also is now finding that bromelain helps eliminate blood clots, numbness in the fingers, seasonal allergies and other aches and pains. It's anti-flammatory properties are similar to ibuprofen. Bromelain pills are available online but make sure you get the real thing.
