When troubled, stressed out or experiencing anxiety attacks, we would often prepare tea and have a cup of this brew to help us relax and calm our frazzled nerves.  There is just something in the tea that soothes and relaxes the body making it alert and more focused.  The calming factor in tea is due to one of the chemicals that can be found in the tea which is theanine.


Scientific findings show that the theanine in the tea stimulates the brain to produce alpha waves that makes the person drinking it feel relaxed but not drowsy.  Furthermore, this chemical is a derivative of amino acid also helps the increased production of dopamine, GABA and tryptophan.  Dopamine is known as a feel good chemical. GABA is a brain inhibitory transmitter, also considered as a neurotransmitter that regulates the body’s feeling of anxiety while tryptophan on the other hand is a natural mood enhancer.  It is also converted into melatonin which in turn helps make a person sleep better.  Other studies conducted suggested that theanine can also be used as an effective treatment for memory loss, depression, painful symptoms of PMS, inability to concentrate and high blood pressure.


As an amino acid, theanine is a common ingredient in many dietary supplements due to its many positive effects to the body.  It is wise however for a person to note that theanine is only considered as a nutritional supplement and should not be taken as a medicine.  Although it has not been proven yet to interact adversely when taken with other prescription drugs or food supplements, it is still best to consult with your doctor.


There are no reports yet as to the negative effects of theanine to the body.  Caution should be observed when given to children or pregnant women. As there are no studies yet as to the effect of this chemical to children and the developing fetus, intake of theanine should be avoided especially since when taken as a tea, theanine is not the only chemical present in the concoction.  Likewise, it should also be avoided by a person who is hypersensitive to theanine and other components present in tea.

While studies are still being conducted to determine if there are harmful effects of theanine to the body, always remember that moderation is still the best practice.
