Cortisol Hormones

Cortisol is a hormone that has been widely discussed in the news and on television lately, with regard to its relationship to weight gain or loss. Some of the latest research indicates that Cortisol is affected by other hormones, and can either increase or decrease according to stress levels in the body that control production of those other hormones. The relationship between Cortisol and weight gain or loss is direct. As Cortisol levels rise under stress, so does weight gain. As Cortisol levels decrease under reduced stress, weight loss is possible.

This article is related to Isocort, the dietary supplement.

Several well known authors have publicized this relationship. In his recent televised PBS special and new book, “Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice,” Dr. John Gray talks about how different actions like hugging can increase “happy hormones” like Oxytocin and Endorphins, which in turn will decrease stress. The reduction of stress allows a decrease of Cortisol, and makes both happiness and weight loss easier to achieve.

By stimulating the happy hormones that reduce Cortisol, the body can help fight disease through stabilization of blood sugar, insulin levels and also benefit effort for weight loss and an increase in sexual desire. The economic effects of maintaining a healthy weight were also discussed recently on The Doctor Oz Show when Dr. Mehmet Oz hosted financial guru Suze Orman. They quoted a May, 2010, Stanford University study by Jay Bhattacharaya, M.D., PhD., that relates weight to economics. In brief, overweight persons are paid significantly less than normal weight persons, and this impacts their economic well being. Another relationship between health and wealth is that when under stress, people tend to eat more and spend more.

Maintaining proper levels of Cortisol can benefit the body in many ways, but the most significant impact would be on weight control, disease prevention and financial health.
