Criticisms On The Use Of Theanine

This ingredient is contained in Nuvoxil, a popular Neuroscience product.

Theanine is a dietary supplement known for its many positive effects to the body.  Aside from its overall calming effect, it is also used to treat a variety of conditions including high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, memory loss and it is also known to work together with cancer medications making these cancer drugs more effective in fighting cancer cells.  In Japan, where it was initially discovered, they also use theanine in their chewing gum and soft drinks to provide a calming, relaxing effect without getting drowsy or groggy.

An amino acid, this natural supplement can be found in tea, specifically the green tea and a certain variety of mushroom known as basidiomycete mushroom.  Further studies conducted in this chemical established theanine as GRAS or generally recognized as safe for universal consumption.

Theanine is a glutamic acid analog that increases production of serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain.  Scientific findings show that this compound can help promote weight loss by suppressing fat accumulation and weight gain.  It increases the body’s resistance to bacteria.  It decreases the size of blood clots in stroke and promotes relaxation.  Theanine is also known to improve mental acuity and prevent depression by blocking stress hormones.

Dosage recommended for theanine to be effective is from 50 to 200 mg per day or about 2 to 4 cups of green tea in a day.  If in capsule form, it should not be taken on an empty stomach. The effects will be felt in about 30 minutes to two hours after ingestion.

Although theanine is used in various products, the addition of isolated theanine to beverages was objected to by the Federal Institute of Risk Assessment.  The contention was that the quantity of theanine consumed in green tea or coffee is virtually impossible to quantify.  It further states that some reactions to theanine could include the impairment of psychomotor skills, the amplification of the sedating effects of alcohol and hypnosis.

A later study however revealed that there was no adverse effect of theanine to the body, mortality, food consumption, efficiency and behavior.
