DHEA is a hormone naturally produced by the body. It can also be found in supplements containing soy and/or wild yam. Levels of DHEA in the body begin to decrease after age 30 and many people use a DHEA supplement. When taken as a nutritional supplement, DHEA has a wide variety of uses including the use as a nutritional supplement in weight gain and body building, to treat ED in men, improving thinking skills, cervical cancer, Crohn's Disease, reversing the signs of aging, and many other conditions. Currently there is a ban on DHEA by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. DHEA is taken by mouth, usually in doses between 25 mg and 50 mg per day for two to four weeks. The amount of DHEA taken varies with the condition that it is being used for. It should be used under supervision from a doctor when taken for longer periods or in higher doses. According to the Natural Medicines Database, DHEA can be effective for some of its indicated uses when used for short amounts of times. It is not known if DHEA is safe when taken for large periods of time, or when taking more than 100 mg per day. There are side effects of taking DHEA including stomach upset, acne, hair loss, and facial hair growth. These effects were usually minimal when taken in smaller dosage.
