DHEA and Hormonal Balance

DHEA and Hormonal Balance

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Hormones are substances that are naturally produced by the body to help it function well. They are produced by the endocrine system of the body at varying levels. It is important that the body maintains certain levels of these hormones for it to function normally. But as we grow with age some hormones production may become more or less, arising the need for hormonal supplements. Hormonal imbalance may also be the reason why we feel stressed, depressed, fatigue and the cause for menstrual mood swings that men can never completely understand.

Dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA is a prohormone or steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. This is a precursor to the male and female sex hormones known as testosterone and estrogen respectively. The peak of production of this substance in the body is during early adulthood and peaks down with age. It has been studied that at about age 70, DHEA production in the body is only about 20 percent of the body’s production during the late teens or 20’s. DHEA levels may also be decreased by drugs such as insulin, corticosteroids, opiates and danazol.

DHEA is also referred to as the “mother hormone” because it is the source that fuels the body’s metabolic pathway. The adrenal gland also produces other hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Poor nutrition, work-related stress and an unhealthy lifestyle may lead to adrenal exhaustion which means that it cannot manufacture enough cortisol and consequently DHEA to support a healthy, normal hormonal balance thus leading to a dead-tired feeling.

Studies show that adequate levels of DHEA are needed to ensure that the body produces the right amount of hormones at the right time. This balanced hormonal state leads to an optimistic and idealistic take on life. DHEA is a feel-good hormone which works quickly

When the adrenals do not produce those adequate levels of DHEA, the body does not have enough working material for endocrines to function properly. This in turn leads to varying hormonal production leading to hormonal imbalance. Thus supplement of DHEA are now being taken, with the support and guidance of medical practitioners of course, to help the body combat hormonal imbalance.
