DHEA for Bone Health

DHEA for Bone Health

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Running in your older years is never and will never be the same as when you were at your youth running around like crazy till you drop because of fatigue. When men get older, there’s more to consider than just getting tired or dehydrated, there is the risk of maybe getting a sprain, or a broken bone. Why? Because men’s bones become brittle as one gets older.

Our body produces various chemicals to help it function but these substances must be maintained at a certain level to help the body function efficiently. Aside from calcium, which is famous for being the mineral to take for bone health, one of the substances that are naturally produced in the body which is highly linked with keeping the body youthful is DHEA.

Dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA is a prohormone or steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. This is a precursor to the male and female sex hormones known as testosterone and estrogen respectively. The peak of production of this substance in the body is during early adulthood and peaks down with age. It has been studied that at about age 70, DHEA production in the body is only about 20 percent of the body’s production during the late teens or 20’s. DHEA levels may also be decreased by drugs such as insulin, corticosteroids, opiates and danazol.

Even though the body can produce DHEA on its own, the depleting production also needs supplementation. DHEA oral supplements in the form of pills are also available for consumption to compensate the lowering ability of DHEA production of the body as people age. They can also be made in a laboratory from a substance called diosgenin, found in soybeans and wild yam

One of the most exciting benefits that men and women can get from DHEA is its ability to help keep people looking youthful. According to researches conducted, the lack of DHEA in the body can be associated with low bone density, thus, supplementation with DHEA has been studied to increase bone density. It is usually taken by mouth or applied as a cream to the inner thigh. This ability of DHEA supplements still need further research, and along side calcium and vitamin D, the results of future researchers may also help fight osteoporosis.
