Dhea to Combat Cancer

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Cancer is one of the most infamous diseases known to man. It is tricky and more often than not fatal. This disease has taken lives and has drastically changed lives of those who have them and the loved ones of its victims.

Our body was naturally built with fighters or defenders against diseases but this to fails. But there are substances naturally manufactured by the human body that may help fight the big C, this is a prohormone known as DHEA.

Dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA is a prohormone or steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. This is a precursor to the male and female sex hormones known as testosterone and estrogen respectively. The peak of production of this substance in the body is during early adulthood and peaks down with age. It has been studied that at about age 70, DHEA production in the body is only about 20 percent of the body’s production during the late teens or 20’s. DHEA levels may also be decreased by drugs such as insulin, corticosteroids, opiates and danazol.

Researchers and scientists have found that DHEA increases the activity of lymphocytes which are natural killer cells in the body that find and combat viruses but also abnormal cells that may be cancerous. DHEA was not found to increase the number of these Lymphocytes but its function and activity increased. This suggests that DHEA heightened the quality of the body’s natural defense against cancer over increasing the number of lymphocytes to do the task.

Another study conducted on mice and rats lead to the conclusion that DHEA has a possible preventive activity against the progression phase of radiation-induced mammary tumorigenesis. There are also researches that found a correlation between low DHEA levels and T cell leukemia, leading doctors to speculate that DHEA might be able to help in this case. Other researches also show that DHEA has the ability to inhibit cancer cells thymidine which is a factor in cellular propagation. It is claimed that this prohormone aids in the modulation of the effects of chemical carcinogens on cells
