EpiPen

The EpiPen is an injection which contain the active ingredient epinephrine or adrenaline which is naturally produced by the adrenal gland. It is and injection which is administered as an emergency treatment to severe allergic reactions involving the constriction of the air passageways in the body or to the severe allergic reaction known as anaphylactic shock.

This neurotransmitter is related to Calm PRT, Kavinace, AdreCor, Balance D, and ExcitaPlus.

Epinephrine or adrenaline is hormones that is responsible for the fight or flight response of the body to certain situations that require the body to run or face the situation. They are released by the adrenal glands in response to stressful situations giving the body the added boost or extra exertion it needs to respond to threatening situations.

Allergic reactions are quite prevalent to humans. But for some patients, the reaction to allergens is much more severe. The allergens including drugs, food or an insect bite may cause inflammation and restriction of the airways, thus blocking the air passageways. This reaction is known as an anaphylactic shock. Anaphylactic shock is a serious condition that may lead to death if not treated urgently. Symptoms of this condition may include itching of the skin, rashes, swelling of the lips, throat, hands and feet, a weak pulse, difficulty in breathing, a sudden fall in blood pressure and in a few cases even loss of consciousness.

Adrenaline in EpiPen may aid reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis by acting on alpha and beta adrenergic receptors in the body. When the alpha receptors found on the walls of the blood vessels are stimulated by adrenaline, the blood vessels are narrowed therefore halting the fall of blood pressure to dangerous levels. This also redirects blood flow to the heart and brain. On the other hand, when epinephrine stimulates beta receptors found in the heart and lungs, air passages relaxes and opens, thus making breathing easier. Adrenaline also aids in reducing itching.

The EpiPen is intended for self-administration in an emergency and should be carried with you all the time. The EpuPen should be stabbed into the outer thigh from a distance of approximately 10cm and should be held in the thigh for 10 seconds. It should always be remembered that one should always seek medical help immediately after using it for
