Glutamate Overview

Glutamate: Overview

Glutamate is an amino acid that can be found in many natural foods.  It is also produced in the body and is abundant in the brain as it plays a central role in brain metabolism. Brain contains a fairly high amount of glutamate more than any of the other 20 amino acids. It is used to make proteins and takes part in typical metabolic functions like energy production, detoxification of ammonia and protein synthesis.

This neurotransmitter is related to Balance D, Daxitrol, Kavinace, and TravaCor.

Amino acids are essential to almost all bodily function.  These serve as fuel for the body’s metabolic functions. Dietary proteins are broken down into amino acids by digestion. Protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products and protein-rich plant foods are natural sources of glutamic acid.

Furthermore, glutamate acts as a major excitatory transmitter in the brain. Hence, it is involved in most aspects of normal brain function including cognition, memory, and learning. It is also essential for motor coordination and other brain functions.

Glutamate is a substance that is both essential and toxic. This is because it intercedes with lots of information which regulates brain development. It is involved in the information that determines cellular survival, differentiation and elimination as well as the formation of nerve contacts (synapses). Thus, it follows that it has to be present in the right concentration, in the right places at the right time. Too much or too little of this could have harmful effects in the body.

Studies revealed that increased levels of glutamate causes autism and other neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Since glutamate is naturally produced in the body, too much of this would not have good results. Be aware of the amount you have to take coming from other sources. However, not getting enough also may result to protein degradation as every chemical reaction that takes place in the body greatly depends on amino acids.
