History and Importance of Acetylcholine

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

The discovery of acetylcholine by Henry Dale in the year 1914 has open doors to a whole new definition and applications of this chemical compound and now popularly being recognized as a neurotransmitter. Acetylcholine was discovered due to its actions on the heart tissue, and then later on found out by a man in the name of Otto Loewi that it is a neurotransmitter. It was the first neurotransmitter that has been discovered and then later on they found out others that functions relatively for the brain. In fact, both Loewi and Dale were granted Nobel Prize Award for their development in the field of Physiology and Medicine.

Later development of acetylcholine includes its importance in the skeletal muscle fibers. It is found out that the presence of ach in the body enables the effect in the membrane of the sodium channels. This event causes muscle contraction to stimulate by letting the sodium ions blend with the muscle cells. While acetylcholine is involved in inducing the skeletal muscle’s contraction, it performs a reverse role which is decreasing the contraction of the cardiac muscle fibers.

Since then, the medical value of acetylcholine has caught the attention of a lot of experts in the field of medicine, which lead them to create drugs related with the functions of acetylcholine. These medicines are involved in boosting the efficiency of ach in the body.

On the other hand, studies show, though not yet concluded that malfunction of acetylcholine with regards to its relationship with nicotinic receptors can result to a chronic fatigue syndrome. It has been observed in experiments done with CFS patients that when acetylcholine fails to function in the peripheral nervous system, they experienced muscle fatigue. This observation is made stronger by the fact that lack of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction results to common cases of muscular fatigue.
