Importance of Bromelain

Persons who eat pineapple are treating themselves for arthritis, swelling and bruising from injuries or following surgery, sinus inflammation and, because it's an enzyme, it aids in digestion. An herb called bromelain is derived from the stem and fruit of the pineapple. It is an enzyme aiding in digestion but it has benefits for so much more. First and foremost it is an anti-inflammatory. If the patient has trauma or injury, bromelain has been shown to reduce the swelling and pain. After surgical procedures, swelling and bruising are common and bromelain helps alleviate these. In patients with sinus problems, breathing is normalized, coughing gone and swelling disappears using bromelain. The same with arthritis. As an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, 1,000 to 1,200 mg three times a day is shown to be beneficial. Many herbs have no side effects but can interfere with the processes of other herbs or chemical medications. This one is known to cause heavy bleeding in menstruating women, asthma symptoms, nausea and diarrhea among others. Those allergic to pineapple should not take bromelain. Few herbs have side effects, much less bad ones, but an allergy to the herb's root plant should be respected. When we are injured, swelling is the body's way of protecting the injured member. Pain and swelling can keep us from bending joints to walk or lift our phone to our faces to call for help. Bromelain can help.
