Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) or sometimes regarded as acetylcarnitine is closely related to L-carnitine (LC). In fact ALC is a derivative of L-carnitine and they share similarities in form, chemical composition, and in some functions. The main difference between the two is the fact that Acetyl-L-carnitine is usually in the form of dietary supplements that are especially made to aid individuals who are in need of high level of acetyl-L-carnitine in the body. Also, ALC has the ability to easily penetrate the blood-brain barrier and also serve for proper synthesis of acetylcholine in the body. Acetyl-L-carnitine is also famous for being a “brain food” since it has many benefits for the human brain.

The primary function of L-carnitine in the body is to aid in breaking down fatty acids by transporting them into the mitochondria, which is the “furnace of the cell”. From there, fats are converted to energy which is needed by the body to perform every activity. The level of L-carnitine in the body is proportional to its ability to produce energy and dissolve unnecessary fats. These fatty acids from the food we eat can become permanent in our body if L-carnitine level is not enough to break them down into energy.

Acetyl-L-carnitine in the form of dietary supplement on the other hand, boosts the L-carnitine level in the body which leads to a boost in its ability to perform its functions. In addition, Acetyl-L-carnitine is also found to have other functions such as improving mental and memory functions and promotes weight loss.

Experts claimed that acetyl-L-carnitine is better than L-carnitine when it comes to bioavailability. This means that the body can more efficiently use, create, and recycle ALC than LC. Effects of both are found to be enhanced with sodium and both use the same system for absorption in the intestine. Also it has been found that ALC possesses a lower blood concentration after ingestion and maybe this is due to the fact that acetyl-L-carnitine is more hydrolyzed in blood.
