This ingredient is contained in CysNAC, TheaNAQ, Daxitrol, and Balance D.

Acetaminophen is one of the most common over the counter medication used in many homes. It is usually used as treatment for low grade fever and mild pain. As time goes by, people had developed its confidence to use the drug as it has been proven effective and safe. However, what we usually overlook is that excessive amounts of acetaminophen can cause serious and fatal threats to your health.

What is acetaminophen?

Acetaminophen is the active compound in Tylenol. It is an over the counter medication that may also go with the names Benadryl, Contac, Alka-Seltzer Plus, Co-Gesic, Darvocet, Butalbital, Lortab, Norco, Excedrin, Sedapap, Midrin, Fioricet, Unisom, Sinutab, DayQuil, Zydone, Vicodin and Wygesic.

Excessive amount of acetaminophen in the system may cause severe damage to the liver. And if that occurs, a liver transplant may be necessary.

What causes acetaminophen or Tylenol poisoning?

Acetaminophen overdose is primarily caused by liver damage because the drug is metabolized in the liver. Increased amount of the drug may overwhelm the liver causing it to overwork that may lead to injuries.

If the liver is already damaged due to excessive alcohol intake, infection or other medical condition, then a person is more prone to acetaminophen poisoning. This is the reason why individuals that take too much alcohol should be careful when self medicating with Tylenol. As a matter of fact, the FDA or the US Food and Drug Administration advices that anyone consumes at least 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages daily should not take the acetaminophen and other related drugs at all.

What is the antidote for acetaminophen or Tylenol poisoning?

NAC or N-acetylcysteine is the antidote for acetaminophen poisoning. It is given within 8 hours of ingesting the said drug. N-acetylcysteine helps prevent damage to liver if administered early. That is why it is critical that acetaminophen poisoning be recognized and diagnosed to be addressed correctly and early.
