Have you ever come across someone who needs to knock three times on the door before leaving the house? This is an example of Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD behavior. OCD has been seen in the movie Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo in so many situations. And as we can see, this can be a very crippling disorder.

OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder. People who have this experience unexplainable, irrational and uncontrollable impulses and tics given a certain situation, for example, one feels the need to tap his head five times every time he hears a car horn. This behavior is deemed peculiar to others, and those who do not understand their situation may lead them to mock and ridicule this people. And in return, people suffering from OCD become ashamed or humiliated about their condition. More than the social consequence of the disorder, this may lead to the disruption of normal leaving, lessened productivity and focus.

Of course, those suffering from OCD need help. Medical practitioners have treatments and therapies for patients suffering from OCD. Treatments include support groups and stress management techniques. Meditation is one of the most familiar therapies given to improve stress management. Antianxiety drugs and anti depressants are also prescribed to help ease OCD. Some of the drugs that are famous for the treatment are Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac. But these medications need to be taken in large doses for them to work, and with the discovery of possible side effects from taking large doses of these drugs, a need for something to help lower the dosage arises, and that is where acetyl-L-carnitine comes to play.

Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) is a naturally occurring substance that is converted in the body to L-carnitine. The primary role of L-carnitine in the body is to deliver fatty acids across the body to the mitochondrion which breaks down these fatty acids to produce the needed energy of the body to perform its functions. Although the body can supply L-carnitine, sometimes it is not enough to cover all the energy requirements, thus supplements of L-carnitine have made especially for these purposes.

Studies have shown that acetyl-L-carnitine helps increase the effects of the medications for OCD; this permits patients to lower their dosages, reducing the incidence of some side effects. The OCD Recovery Center lists acetyl-L-carnitine as a medicinal complement indicating acetyl-L-carnitine had benefits in improving visual memory and short-term memory.
