Problems Associated with Eating Vicia Faba L Dopa

Problems Associated with Eating Vicia Faba L Dopa

Vicia faba has been associated with the treatment of Parkinson’s disease because it naturally produces levodopa, an amino acid necessary to improve the symptoms of the said disease. However, you need to be aware that although Vicia faba is an edible plant, it can bring problems to health if not used properly.

Varying Amounts of Levodopa

Because the plant may contain varying amounts of L-dopa, you are either ingesting too little or too much. Too little amounts cannot obviously help you alleviate or improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Too much on the other hand may exaggerate the effects resulting to dyskinesia and nausea.

Raw Beans Can Cause Allergies

Eating the beans raw may trigger allergic reactions to some people. Symptoms may include discomfort and sometimes, though very rare, coma. Cooking the beans helps prevent such unwanted reactions.

Drug Interaction with MAOI

MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitor includes tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenylzine (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan) and selegiline (deprenyl, Carbex, Eldepryl). These drugs if taken with pressor agents like food rich in dopamine, can lead to dangerous and potentially fatal increase in blood pressure. The levodopa found in faba beans and in medications is converted to dopamine in the bloodstream.

Selegiline (deprenyl, Carbex, Eldepryl) is a MAOI-type B, a different kind of MAOI. For patients taking medications for Parkinson’s, selegiline is usually given at a dosage of 10mg daily and it was noted that it does not pose a risk when used with dopamine. But, if a patient is needed to take selegiline along with pressor agents, he or she needs to seek consult and clearance first from her physician and dietitian.

Favism (G6PD Deficiency)

Favism is a disorder in which a person lacks the enzyme G6PD or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. When a person with such condition eats fava beans, he or she can develop hemolytic anemia. This can cause the red blood cells to break down easily that can potentially block the blood vessels.
