Proper Amounts Of Chromium

The mineral Chromium is a necessarily of the body, which can be found in certain foods. Although it is not clear of the exact needed amounts or of its specific actions within the body, it is known to assist the actions of insulin, which is a crucial hormone for proper metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. This mineral also seems to be specifically involved with the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.  Chromium can be found in most foods, but only in very small amounts. Vegetables, fruits, meat, spices and whole-grain products are fairly good sources of this mineral, although foods that contain high amounts of simple sugars such as fructose and sucrose are low chromium.  Several conditions can cause a reduced level of chromium in the body. If diets are high in simple sugars, the body will increase the amount of chromium excreted in the urine. Pregnancy, lactation, vigorous exercise, infection and physical trauma can also increase the amount of chromium that is lost, causing a deficiency. This can occur especially if the intake of chromium is already below proper intake amounts. A study was done on chromium that found that this mineral can correct insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in animals with deficient amounts of chromium. This provided evidence that the body could fail without proper amounts of chromium to control blood sugar levels properly, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.
