Riboflavin and Toxicity

Riboflavin or vitamin B2 is an essential water soluble vitamin which acts as a coenzyme essential in the development of tissue respiration system. It is also contributes to the effective metabolism of various energy sources like carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Function of Riboflavin

Riboflavin is actively transferred to fetus which results to higher concentration of the said vitamin in the newborn than with its mother. The flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) present in the serum is converted by the placenta into free riboflavin found in the fetal circulation. And because the pathway of transferring this free riboflavin back to the mother is inhibited, the vitamin is retained in the fetus.

At term, newborns have an average value 318 ng/mL while their mothers have an average riboflavin value of 184 ng/mL. In a more recent study, the values noted were 158 ng/mL in newborns and 113 ng/mL in mothers.

Recommended Daily Intake (RDI)

The daily recommended daily intake of vitamin B2 is 1.0 to 1.5 mg for both adults and children.

Effects of Riboflavin in Pregnacy and Breastfeeding

Riboflavin or vitamin B2 plays a very important role in the growth and development of babies, especially during the first few weeks of their lives. A daily intake of 1.5mg is recommended by the National Academy of Sciences for pregnant women. No supplementation is necessary for those who consumes sufficient amounts of riboflavin from their diets.

Food Sources

Foods rich in riboflavin include milk, yoghurt, cheese, yeast, wheat germs, fortified cereals, whole grains and eggs. Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and asparagus are also good sources of riboflavin.

Heat, and therefore cooking, does not destroy the vitamin but exposure to light does.

There have been no reported adverse reactions for excessive riboflavin intake. Nevertheless, it is still advisable to follow the recommended daily dose.
