Serotonin Deficiency

Serotonin Deficiency

This neurotransmitter is affected by Nuvoxil and TravaCor

Serotonin, as a major neurotransmitter in the brain, is found to be involved in the emotional context of humans. It is responsible for a lot of brain functions like sleep, learning, memory, mood, and behavior like sexual and hallucinogenic. It also has a role in temperature regulation, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction and endocrine regulation. These complex functions will be greatly affected when serotonin drop down from its normal level.

Any imbalance would result to psychological and physical disorders. Studies have shown that this chemical has a direct connection with depression. Other psychological and physical disorders would also arise with the deficiency like increased sensitivity to pain, insomnia, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), panic attacks, alcoholism, obesity, and eating disorders such as bulimia.

Depressed people, those suffering from anxiety attacks and those with schizophrenia are being given medications that help increase serotonin levels in the brain.

However, there are natural ways by which the deficiency would be increased. One is through having regular exercise. Doing regular exercise releases “feel good” hormones that ease stress. Stress and tension are found to be contributory to the decrease in serotonin levels. Another natural way is by getting enough sleep. Having enough sleep results to more mental alertness and a happy disposition that would get you through the day. Also, getting enough sunlight would help increase the production. The body creates this as you wake-up, the amount that will be produced will depend on the amount of sunlight you are exposed to.

Another natural way to increase the level is through relaxation. Listening to relaxing music and doing yoga exercise would do well. Having a good laugh would have good effects too.

In addition, eating foods rich in tryptophan also help increase the level in the brain. This should be taken together with complex carbohydrates. Foods rich in tryptophan are chicken, turkey, wheat germ and eggs. Dairy products, bananas and walnuts are good sources also.

There are a lot of ways in which this neurotransmitter could be increased and maintained to its right level. You can take medications or you can go natural.
