 The brain is wired accordingly with several million neurons or brain cells that constantly communicate with one another by sending and receiving certain molecules. These molecules transmitted by the brain cells or neurons are called neurotransmitters. Serotonin is one of these neurotransmitters that are responsible in mental functions.

 Our body produces serotonin and present in blood capillaries, intestinal membranes and central nervous system which composed of the brain and spinal cord. It has been found to have multiple functionalities and is responsible for appetite, sleep, sexual behavior, learning and memory. It also has controlling function over temperature, endocrine glands, and cardiovascular activities.


Too much tension, stress and lack of sleep cause serotonin levels to drop. Changes in the level lead to mood swings, anxiety, irritability and emotional instability, high sensitivity to pain and worst, depression. Depressed people are found to have very low levels of this. There are many ways by which this neurotransmitter could be increased and maintained at the right level. Exercise is the best and very cheap way to start with. It is said having exercise regularly produces “feel good” hormones. Increasing serotonin level is one of the many benefits of having regular exercise. It is found also that the level stay high for a number of days after a good workout. Doing aerobics and weights as well as walking, jogging and biking are very good.


Eating foods rich in tryptophan, one of the 20 amino acids, together with complex carbohydrates also helps increase its level. Complex carbohydrates help tryptophan reach the brain. Some of the foods that contain this amino acid are turkey, chicken, cottage cheese, wheat germ, eggs, dairy products, soy, walnuts and bananas. On the other hand, some of the best sources of complex carbohydrates are whole wheat bread, cereals and crackers, oatmeal, beans and pasta.


This neurotransmitter has to be on the right level at all times in order for humans to function normally. Any imbalance, whether increase of decrease, would result to psychological conditions.
