Serotonin syndrome is a negative medical condition caused by misuse, overdose and recreation usage of drugs that affects the levels of serotonin in the body. This syndrome is life threatening as it can cause harmful reactions in the body. Serotonin being a neurotransmitter, affects primarily the central nervous systems and its activities. Most researchers view and treat it as a kind of poisoning. Poisoning, by definition, is the turbulence that a substance can produce into the body causing harmful effects and activities.

How do you detect serotonin syndrome?

Serotonin syndrome can be identified through different signs and symptoms. Most common manifestations are palpitation or excessive heartbeat and swelling. Patient may also have dilated pupils and exaggerated response in various activities.  Other signs and symptoms include rapid change in blood pressure, increased body temperature, diarrhea, restlessness, agitation, nausea and vomiting.

Serotonin syndrome may also affect one’s cognitive function that may lead to serious mental disorder, confusion, hallucinations and even coma. The syndrome may also have somatic effects like twitching of the muscles and tremor. Tremor is referred to as the tightening and relaxation of the muscles that can cause involuntary movements in different parts of the body.

What causes serotonin syndrome?

Serotonin syndrome is primarily produced by the interaction of various drugs that affects the levels of serotonin in the body. The drugs may cause too much serotonin to release in the body or to remain it in the brain area.

For example, you may develop this syndrome if you take your drugs for migraine treatment along with antidepressants, particularly SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

How do you treat serotonin syndrome?

Patients with serotonin syndrome are advised to stay in the hospital for at least 24 hours for close observation. Treatment may include:

  • Benzodiapines
  • Cyproheptadine
  • IV fluids
  • Withdrawal from the medicines that caused the syndrome
