The Memory Neurotransmitter

The Memory Neurotransmitter

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Memories are essential to each and every person. They serve as our immortal bonds to the past. There are memories that we want to keep and remember for the rest of our lives and there are those we just want to forget, but one thing is for sure, no one wants our ability to retain memories to be completely gone.

For those who are new to these terms, a neurotransmitter is a chemical signaling molecule produced in the brain. When a neurotransmitter is released into the junction where two cells in the brain meet or a synapse, it crosses the gap and holds to the receptors intended for it. These receptors then get activated to make a further action or to stop signaling. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter deeply involved with learning and memory.

As people grow older, memory tends to decrease with age. Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common memory related illness that hit humans in their old age. This ailment has become a popular topic for movies and series that we so willfully watch but do not fully understand. This is the most common form of dementia, which is a memory related disorder that is serious enough to interfere with our daily living. Some signs of Alzheimer's include memory loss that disrupts daily life, difficulty in problem solving and completing usual tasks, time and date confusion, and difficulty in retaining new information and so on. Today, there has been no cure yet for this fatal and progressive brain disorder which destroys brain cells.

The link between decreasing levels of acetylcholine and Alzheimer's disease has been established due to the purpose of acetylcholine with regards to memory and Alzheimer's being a disease related to loss of memory. It has been seen that there is about 90% loss of acetylcholine in the brains of those suffering from the disorder.
