The Production of Acetylcholine

This neurotransmitter is affected by Avipaxin and Daxitrol

Acetylcholine is formed through the combination of compounds choline and acetic acid. It is also known as ach, the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain. Acetylcholine is active at the motor end of the voluntary muscles’ vertebrate and in many nerve synapses. It is present in a several chemical processes in the body pertaining to the nervous and cardiovascular systems. It is also involved in stimulating the secretion of certain glands related to nerve impulses and has a very important role in learning and memory.

Acetylcholine is released by the cholinergic nerve fibers. It is responsible for various biological functions in the body. In the digestive system acetylcholine acts to refine the peristalsis process that help to prevent constipation. Acetylcholine is the most plentiful neurotransmitter residing in the brain, though some of it is also produced in the intestines.

The medicinal value of acetylcholine has caught the attention of a lot of experts in the field of medicine, which lead them to create drugs related with the functions of acetylcholine. One of the main functions of acetylcholine involves being a medium of transmission between the skeletal muscle fibers at the neuromuscular junctions and the motor nerves.

Upon release of acetylcholine in the body, it acts almost instantly which causes a sequence of chemical and physical processes starting with the motor endplate depolarization which later on leads to the muscle fiber contraction.

The presence of acetylcholine as requested by the body happens instantly and terminates rapidly once its role is done. The whole process from the excretion of ach and its termination happens in about a tenth of a second. Once it has done its role, the enzyme cholinesterase will then function to break the acetylcholine back to its components which are the choline and acetate ion, which are also the same components that bring back ach again when needed. That’s why recycling process is also involved in the way how acetylcholine works.
