The Relationship and Benefits of Glutamate and Glutamine

Glutamate or glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid that is naturally produced in our bodies. It is used by the body for a variety of functions. Glutamate is a precursor of glutamine, one of the 20 amino acids involved in the different metabolic processes.

Glutamine on the other hand can be found in large amounts in the muscles. And since it can readily pass through the blood-brain barrier, it is often referred to as the brain fuel or “smart-vitamin”, though the fact that it is not a vitamin at all. Glutamine can also be converted back to glutamate, making the 2 of them somewhat interchangeable.

This neurotransmitter is related to CysNAC, EndoPlus, EndoTrex, Nuvoxil, and TheaNAQ.

Glutamate is also an important precursor of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, and folic acid. It may also play an important role in the normal function of the prostate and heart. A normal, healthy body can meet actually meet their daily requirement of glutamate from their diet, so only people who are deficient in protein are most like to become deficient in glutamate.

Glutamic acid is also known as one of the most common and important neurotransmitters. It is an excitatory neurotransmitter. It is one the few substances that can pass the blood-brain barrier and is necessary to transport potassium across the blood-brain barrier. This is the only way by which ammonia in the brain can be detoxified. Moreover, it plays an important part in the metabolism of fats and sugars.

Glutamate is considered as a natural “brain food” as this substance can greatly improve one’s mental capacities. It is also used in the treatment of fatigue, depression, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy and mental retardation.

Because it is proven that glutamine is very critical in the normal function of the nervous system, whenever we experience illness, stress or surgery, the glutamine stores in the muscles are released up to one-third of the total storage. This however can cause significant muscle deterioration and loss.
