What Is Echinacea

Echinacea is a purplish-pink flower. There are nine known types of echinacea plants. All of the different species are native to the United States and southern Canada. Out of all the different types of the plant, Echinacea purpurea is believed to be the most potent and most commonly used one. There are several uses Echinacea is used for. It has traditionally used for colds, flu, and other infections in treating them and trying to prevent them. Echinacea can also be used to stimulate the immune system to help fight infections. Wounds and skin problems, like acne and boils, echinacea has also been used for, but it is less common to use it for those problem areas. Echinacea can be used either fresh or dried. Besides the above mentioned uses, echinacea can also be used to make teas, juice, and extracts. The above ground parts of the plant and the roots are what is used of echinacea. There are some side effects and cautions a person needs to know when using echinacea. If a person is allergic to plants in the daisy family, they may have a reaction to echinacea. Some people have experienced gastrointestinal side effects too when they have taken this herb. If a person experiences a rash, increased asthma symptoms, or anaphylaxis, then they need to consult a physician right away. Most people do not have any side effects when taking echinacea.
